Red Sox - Indians 6 Player Deal

The Red Sox have traded:

Catching prospect Kelly Shoppach
Top orginizational prospect 3rd basemen Andy Marte
Relief pitcher Guillermo Mota
Player to be named later
Cash

For

Centerfielder Coco Crisp
Catcher Josh Bard
Relief Pitcher David Riske

I'm not a huge fan of this trade. I think the Red Sox got ripped off. Don't get me wrong, we needed a centerfielder and Coco Crisp is one of the better centerfielders in the league but we gave up way too much. We got a very good centerfielder and a couple of spare parts for two top prospects, a relief pitcher with good stuff, cash, and then another player to be named later. That's way too much for Crisp. I know prospects aren't a guaranteed success but Marte hit 20 homeruns at triple A. Shoppach hit 26 Homers which is good for a catcher.

That being said, I do like what Crisp brings to the table. When comparing Damon and Crisp people keep saying Damon is better than Crisp. There's no denying Damon is a better lead-off hitter but a better player? I don't know about that.

I think Coco has more speed which will be evident this season as Damon is 32 years old entering this season and Coco is 26. I've heard the arms are comparable but I have heard that Coco might be a little bit stronger. Coco has shown that he's a better power hitter. For the tolerance factor I'll take Crisp. I could never stand Damon even when he was on the Red Sox. Always hogging the spotlight and making the Red Sox into a complete joke by saying "we're just a bunch of idiots". I'll take Crisp over Damon.

They did pick up Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota from Florida for 2-3 top notch prospects. Mota has since been traded to Cleveland in the Crisp deal. The Red Sox have made some very good trades this off-season.

This Off-season's trades:

Edgar Renteria for Top Notch 3rd base prospect Andy Marte

Top Notch Shortsop Prospect Hanley Ramirez and two or three other pitching prospects for 3rd Basemen Mike Lowell, Reliever Guillermo Mota, and Starting Pitcher Josh Beckett

Newly aqquired 3rd base prospect Andy Marte, Newly aqquired Reliver Guillermo Mota, Catching prospect Kelly Shoppach, and two pitching prospects for Centerfielder Coco Crisp, Catcher Josh Bard, and Reliever David Riske

We did give up a few prospects and I wasn't happy about losing Andy Marte but for all we know he might turn out to be nothing. Crisp is an established centerfielder and I don't mind swapping Mota for Riske because Mota has a lot more health concerns with his arm.

The Red Sox ultimately might not have as strong an offense as last year but they've definetly improved their starting pitching, relief pitching, and infield defense.
