The Knicks revealed Friday that Quentin Richardson underwent back surgery on Thursday night and is finished for the season.

In recent weeks, the Knicks have been vague on Richardson's status, saying that he was day-to-day. However, after his most recent MRI and CT scan, the Knicks' team doctors spoke with neurosurgeon Dr. Barth Green in Miami and decided surgery was needed. Green performed the surgery on Richardson on Thursday night.

"He is expected to make a full recovery," Knicks vice president of communications Jonathan Supranowitz said.

Supranowitz said the surgery is not career-threatening and the team expects Richardson to be ready for training camp next season.

Richardson, 27, averaged 13 points and 7.2 rebounds. Arguably the Knicks' best defender, the team will have to make due as it pursues the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Heading into Friday's game, New York was tied with the Pacers -- 1½ games behind current eighth seed Orlando.

Richardson's back has been an issue for much of his pro career. When the Knicks traded Kurt Thomas to Phoenix a little less than two years ago, the deal was delayed because the Knicks did not know that Richardson's back problems were so risky they were not insurable. The Suns ended up sending a first-round draft pick to New York to make up for the insurance issue.

In his two seasons with the Knicks, Richardson has missed 55 games. He is owed more than $26 million over the next three seasons.

This is a dagger to Knicks' playoff hopes
