I'm going with the Red Sox Our starting pitching should be awesome with Schilling, Beckett, and Dice-K. We also have a solidified 4 spot in our rotation with Wakefield. Once Lester is done with his rehab starts he'll likely be taking the 5th spot in our rotation rounding out what has the potential to be the best starting staff in baseball. On top of that we have one of the better offenses in the league. Ortiz, Ramirez, Drew, Lugo, Youkilis, Lowell, Varitek, Crisp, and Pedroia. There are a couple of question marks in there as there are with most offenses. But we can recover from it with the good depth we have. Cora, Wily Mo Pena, and Eric Hinske are good players to have on the bench. Not to mention a center field prospect we have, Jacoby Ellsbury who on last check was hitting .400 at AA and many have compared to Johnny Damon. There are still questions to be answered with our relief pitching. But we have the potential to have a pretty good core of players there. Papelbon closing, Timlin & Donnelly handling the 7th & 8th. Even this new pitcher we got from Japan, lefty Hideki Okajima has been very good for us so far only giving up 2 hits in 6.2 innings with a 1.35 ERA. On top of that we have two pitchers currently at AAA, Manny Delcarmen & Craig Hansen. They spent most of last season in the majors. Delcarmen impressed me with a fastball that reached up to 94 and a wicked 12-6 curve. Unfortunately he hurt his thumb last year which likely accounts for his final numbers for last season. Hansen throws hard but his mechanics still need work. The Yankees are a good team as usual. While their offense impresses me their pitching is really nothing special. In Wang's first fuill season last year he did have a very good year. After that though what do they really have? Aging veterans like Mussina & Pettitte who's best years are probably behind them, an injury prone Carl Pavano, and a guy like Karstens who has no track record at the major league level. They'll be in the race all year regardless. Their offense is that good. But when your offense slumps you need a good pitching performance to pick the team up. There aren't too many guys who can provide that on their staff. The Red Sox have a good mix of both pitching and offense which is why I'm picking them to win the division. Oh, plus the fact that I'm a Red Sox fan. Not that it has anything to do with it I'm not counting Toronto out either. Their team isn't bad at all. Their starting pitching still has too many questions though for me to pick them. And unlike the Yankees they don't have an offense that can carry the team most of the way. Not that it isn't good, but just no where near as good as what the Yankees have. Baltimore and Tampa obviously aren't contenders just yet. |

I'll take the Beantown Bombers, as well. I like how Dice-K is fitting in with the team and, eventually, the offense will come around, too. I am big Ortiz fan. This could another one of those special season for the Red Sox. |

Daisuke looked shakey in the 4th inning today but he rebounded and pitched two scoreless innings following that. The Yankees bullpen looks awful. |
