The Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett in return for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, two first round picks, and cash considerations. My first reaction to this deal, that's an awful lot to give up for one guy. Even a player as good as Garnett. It pains me to see Jefferson dealt because of the awesome potential he's got. Even Gerald Green looks like he could be a superstar in the making. I was also a little bit confused by the fact that the Celtics all of a sudden shifted a philosophy which they'd been promoting for the past 5 years. Building up a young team that can win for years and years to come. All of those years that Celtics fans have suffered through player developments was just thrown away. That being said, the trade is growing on me. It will actually be fun to watch the Celtics knowing that we can compete with even the best teams out there. We aren't the deepest team in the league, but it should be very exciting to watch Pierce, Garnett, and Allen on the floor at the same time. The other reason this trade makes sense. Assuming those young players did develop into good players Paul Pierce would probably be way past his prime at that point. By acquriing Garnett and Allen we're taking advantage of Pierce's good years. This is going to sound pretty simplistic. But to me this trade will be a good one if we win a championship with these guys in the next 3-4 years. If not then this trade was a mistake.
