Browns sign rookie QB Quinn to five-year contract

August 7, 2007

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Brady Quinn got what he was looking for financially from the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns signed quarterback Quinn to a a five-year contract Tuesday that will keep him in Cleveland until 2011.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to a report on FOXSports.com, the deal is worth $20.2 million, with $7.75 million in guaranteed money. The report also said that Quinn could earn up to $30 million in escalator clauses.

The agreement ended a protracted saga between the team and Quinn, who was selected with the 22nd overall pick this past April but felt he deserved more money than his draft position normally dictates.

After paying a heavy price to the Dallas Cowboys for the pick, Cleveland has high hopes for Quinn, Notre Dame's all-time passing leader.

The Cowboys received the 36th overall pick this year along with a first-round pick in 2008 in exchange for the highly touted quarterback.

Many expected the Browns to pick Quinn, who grew up in Dublin, Ohio and wanted to play for Cleveland, with the third overall pick in the draft. Instead, Browns general manager Phil Savage used that pick on Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas.

The 6-4, 232-pound Quinn played in a pro-style offense for the last two years at Notre Dame under coach Charlie Weis, a former offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots. Weis even compared Quinn to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Apparently, many of the NFL's executives and scouts did not agree with Weis.

Quinn set records for completions (929), yards (11,762) and touchdowns (95) at Notre Dame.

But Quinn failed to win the big game, the latest coming in a 41-14 loss to Louisiana State in the Sugar Bowl in January. He completed just 15-of-35 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

In Cleveland, Quinn will compete with Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson for the starting quarterback job. Frye threw just 10 touchdowns with 17 interceptions last season.
