Chicago Bears *TEAM MOD*

From bears.com

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – There’s no truth to the rumor that two Cleveland Browns linebackers were scrambling to pick up their equipment after being victimized by Garrett Wolfe Thursday night at Soldier Field.

With dazzling open-field moves on separate plays on the same second-quarter possession, the Bears rookie running back faked Chaun Thompson and Clifton Smith out of their shoes on receptions of 9 and 14 yards.

Garrett Wolfe showed his elusiveness in the open field in Thursday night's 19-9 preseason-ending loss to the Browns.
“Every player dreams of being in the open field in a one-on-one situation,” Wolfe said. “Any player that considers himself elusive or fast just lives for those types of opportunities because it’s you and the defender.”

On the Bears’ final possession of the second quarter Thursday night, Wolfe caught passes on four straight plays to set up Robbie Gould’s 21-yard field goal on the last play of the half. The third-round pick from Northern Illinois finished with a game-high six receptions for 53 yards.

“He has proven since the first day he got here that he catch the ball out of the backfield and be a threat there,” said offensive coordinator Ron Turner. “If you get him out in space, he can make people miss and he’s tough to bring down.”

While he wasn’t utilized much as a receiver at Northern Illinois, Wolfe knows that proving he can catch the ball out of the backfield will help him get on the field as a Bears rookie.

“It’s very important,” he said. “It will give the coaches more confidence. Everybody has a plan for you, but until you show them that [you’re] worthy of the plan, they may be kind of skeptical. I think in the preseason I have shown I can do that.”

Wolfe also impressed coaches with his ability to pick up the blitz Thursday night, successfully fending off pass rushers despite giving up as much as 80 pounds.

“He’s a good football player,” Turner said. “He showed that on college film, that he’s not afraid to block. He’s not real big, but he’ll give you everything he’s got. He’s a smart player and he’s got a good feel for the game.”

The diminutive 5-7, 186-pound running back has a philosophy when it comes to facing larger opponents.

“The bigger they are, the harder they fall,” Wolfe said. “Granted, it does present a challenge. But I’m not expected to block those guys for 10 seconds. I’m expected to stop the charge and keep them off the quarterback. If I get run over and I don’t give up the sack, I did my job.

“That’s all that matters at the end of the day. I’m not concerned with how pretty it looks as long as I get my job done.”

Wolfe has steadily improved in all facets of the game since he returned after missing one week of training camp with a hamstring injury. He finished the preseason having rushed for 104 yards on 39 carries and caught 11 passes for 76 yards.

“Garrett has made good progress,” Turner said. “We like what we see from him. Every week he’s gotten better and better. He’s playing with more confidence, playing faster. I see that each week. He’s a young player, so he just needs to get on the field and play at this level and get used to the speed of the game and he’s doing that.”

Wolfe was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in his final two seasons at NIU, leading the nation in rushing last year with 1,928 yards and 18 TDs on 309 carries.

A workhorse in college, Wolfe is being utilized as a complementary No. 3 running back behind Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson as a Bears rookie.

“It’s most definitely a different role,” he said. “In college I was asked to carry the ball 30 times a game. I wasn’t a change-of-pace guy. But that’s what I’m asked to do and whatever I’m asked to do I plan on doing.”

Wolfe is not concerned about how much he’ll be utilized on offense. He simply intends to take advantage of every chance he gets to contribute.

“Right now my role is just being a football player,” he said. “Currently I’m No. 3 on the depth chart. I don’t think anything more of it. The No. 3 running back last year didn’t play that much and I don’t expect to play a whole lot, but whatever happens, happens.

“If there are opportunities for me to get the ball, I most definitely am going to try to take advantage of them, but if not, I just have to know my role and accept it and play with it.”

With his lack of size and experience against top competition in college, Wolfe understands that he must prove that he belongs in the NFL. He seemingly showed that he could compete with the big boys when he rushed for 171 yards on 26 carries against Ohio State last season. But the Chicago native realizes that it’s a never-ending battle.

“Some people look at that Ohio State game and say I pretty much answered any doubts,” Wolfe said. “But there’s always going to be questions with me. There’s going to be questions with me in year 10 whether or not I can pick up a blitz or whether or not I can handle it physically.

“But throughout my college career and in high school as well I’ve always been fortunate enough to have the last laugh, and hopefully 10-12 years from now I can have the last laugh as well.”
