Tom ZillerPosted Dec 5th 2007 3:12PM by Tom Ziller Filed under: Hawks, Atlanta Perhaps you haven't noticed (since the Hawks are better than they've been in years, even at 7-10), but Atlanta's Joe Johnson has not met Joe Johnson level expectations recently. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Sekou Smith investigates. Joe's wearing a sleeve on the calf he injured last year but I don't think that's been a major issue this season, at least I don't think it has. What's been off the past three games, and really since the Hawks lost that double overtime thriller to Seattle, has been his swagger. He hasn't been himself, to speak. Everyone has noticed it, too. I've had at least four conversations with scouts from other teams and they've all wondered what the deal is with him. They've acknowledged that he hasn't been horrible but that he simply hasn't been himself. JJ's shooting numbers are way down; it's hard/impossible to measure spirit, but temporal shooting woes are easily quantified, and Joe's shooting of late is made of woe. (.407 FG%, .300 on threes this year versus .442/.372 career.) Sekou mentions the hubbub over Johnson's recent remarks regarding his roster as a source of d'esprit mal, and it does transfer that JJ is an emotional player in several senses. But as heartfelt as Joe's game is, he's also a confident fellow. (You might need to remember the last time he was on national TV, when he played for the Suns.) I think/hope maybe this is all just a standard issue slump which is being overconsidered. (And hey, once Good Joe has returned, this team could actually be good! Al Horford's real! Marvin Williams is real!)
