Going out with a bang

With apologies to Fox, the major television networks couldn't have asked for a bigger holiday gift than the simulcast of the New England Patriots and New York Giants doled out by the NFL this week. It's going to be a weekend filled with storylines, starting with Saturday night's orgy of record-breaking.

Consider what will be on the line:

• The Patriots are poised to wrap their fingers around regular-season perfection, capping a 16-0 season and setting the stage for a postseason that could mark them as the greatest team in NFL history.

• Tom Brady is two touchdowns short of breaking Peyton Manning's NFL-record 49 touchdown passes in a season. And he's going to be doing it across the sideline from Manning's little brother, Eli. How sweet.

• Randy Moss, gone from dastardly devil to league darling, is two scoring catches shy of breaking Jerry Rice's single-season touchdown reception record.

• The Patriots need only six points to break the league's single-season scoring record of 556 points set by the 1998 Minnesota Vikings.

• And of course, thanks to the simulcast on NBC, CBS and the NFL Network, the Patriots/Giants game has the potential to be the single-most watched regular-season game in the history of sports.

Of all the sweet moments in Bill Belichick's career, Saturday night could end up being the sweetest, just from the sheer stranglehold he'll have on the NFL this weekend. Then again, Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning could shock the world and pull the rug out from under New England's feet, which makes Saturday night's game all the more worth watching.

I would LOVE to see us go 16-0, and then 19-0. It would be history.
