Capitals Win Southeast Division Bruce CiskiePosted Apr 5th 2008 9:25PM by Bruce Ciskie Filed under: General NHL, Capitals, Eastern, NHL Awards 21 games into the season, the Washington Capitals had won six games. It was a poor-enough performance to cost coach Glen Hanlon his job. Bruce Boudreau was brought in to take over, and everyone proceeded to forget about the Capitals. It made sense. After all, the Capitals had a horrible record, and they were in last place in a division seen (justifiably) by most as awful. This was happening despite the presence of a player recognized by some as the best in the game. Fast-forward to April 5. The Capitals have just beaten Florida, 3-1, and the win clinches them the Southeast Division title. That player, Alexander Ovechkin, is now generally regarded as the prohibitive favorite for the Hart Trophy. The new coach, Boudreau, is a favorite for the Jack Adams Trophy. The Capitals have made the playoffs for the first time in five years, and they'll be the third seed in the Eastern Conference. They did the hard way. In their last 12 games, Washington picked up 22 out of a possible 24 points. Now Washington will await their first-round opponent. We'll know who it will be on Sunday, once Philadelphia is done playing Pittsburgh. |
