Jerry on the draft: 'We are in an enviable spot'

By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

IRVING -- Former Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells and the Miami Dolphins might have the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, but it’s his former employers who are considered to be sitting in the proverbial catbird’s seat.

The Cowboys' position of prominence is derived from having two first-round picks, No. 22 and 28, and owner Jerry Jones aims to make the most of the situation.

He could maintain his position and take the best players available or he could use them as trade bait -- to either go up, go down to acquire more picks or ship one out to acquire the veteran receiver he still covets.
"The ammo or the consideration to do some of those things are there," Jones said. "But on the other hand, the best value in the draft could very easily be in the bottom 10 picks of the first round. We are in an enviable spot. Those picks are highly thought of there."

Jones is ecstatic about the Cowboys' seemingly advantageous situation. History suggests they have had their best drafts when they have had multiple picks in the first round.

"When you look at when we have drafted with two picks, we have made some things happen,” Jones said. “That is the way it should be. We have more ammo.”

The Cowboys will host draft prospects today and Friday with roughly 30 players from around the nation expected at the team’s Valley Ranch training complex. The prospects are especially concentrated in the need areas of cornerbacks, receivers and running backs.

Among the prospects expected to attend are Texas receiver Limas Sweed, Texas running back Jamaal Charles, Oklahoma receiver Malcolm Kelly, Arkansas running back Felix Jones and Tennessee State cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
