Unable to draft receiver, Cowboys bank on Glenn

By RICK HERRIN
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING -- With the Dallas Cowboys unable to address their desire for a veteran receiver opposite Terrell Owens, they have turned to the hope that Terry Glenn can come back.

Even though Glenn was forced to miss the first 15 regular-season games of 2007 because of a preseason knee injury, the Cowboys are cautiously optimistic he is going to still be the receiver he was before two surgeries.

"It's not because I'm sitting here without having drafted a receiver or done a free agent deal," owner Jerry Jones said. "He has a 50 percent chance of being exactly what we want: a veteran guy the defenses are afraid of that can play the season."

Glenn will turn 34 in July. Last season, he appeared in the Cowboys' last regular-season game and the divisional playoff game against the New York Giants.

"If we didn't think he had the chance to be everything we want him to be, we wouldn't have him back here,"

With or without Glenn, the Cowboys are still looking for a big-play receiver, as well as a safety.

Pacman trade approved
The Cowboys' trade for suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones was approved by the NFL on Sunday. The teams agreed to the trade Wednesday.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones would not divulge the contract details, but it is expected to be a four-year deal without guaranteed money.

Bennett gets a talking
The Cowboys were a bit upset with second-round pick Martellus Bennett, a tight end out of Texas A&M. During a conference call Saturday with the media, he made a reference to Jessica Simpson, Tony Romo's girlfriend.

"Any quarterback that can get Jessica Simpson, I've got to play with him," Bennett said.

The Cowboys called Bennett and addressed the comment. Coach Wade Phillips acknowledged Sunday that Romo has had enough of comments about Simpson.

Undrafted players sign
The Cowboys on Sunday night signed Texas Tech wide receiver Danny Amendola and Hampton defensive end Marcus Dixon, who was the center of a case that drew national coverage.

Amendola caught 109 passes for 1,245 yards and six touchdowns last season and averaged 15.9 yards on punt returns.

Dixon was sentenced to 15 months in prison on charges of aggravated child molestation and statutory rape. His conviction was overturned by the Georgia Supreme Court in 2004. Dixon, who spent 15 months behind bars, said the sex was consensual and that he was targeted by prosecutors because he is black and the girl is white. Dixon was 18 and the girl 15 when the incident occurred.
