NFL notebook: Stomach injury sidelines Newman

An MRI revealed Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman has an abdominal irritation that will force him to miss Sunday's game at Arizona.

Newman, who sat out last Sunday's victory over Cincinnati, said there is no timetable for his return.

“It could be something that flared up and could be done within a week or two,” the team's Web site quoted Newman as saying. “It's been painful for a while, but the pain wasn't unbearable.”

Newman sat out the opener with a groin injury.

Owens explains tears: Dallas receiver Terrell Owens said the death of a family member was the reason he sobbed into a towel after recording a 57-yard catch-and-run touchdown Sunday against Cincinnati.

“I was playing with a heavy heart,” Owens said during an appearance Tuesday on Michael Irvin's radio show in Dallas.

Owens also said the prepared statement he read after the game was written the night before.

“I am a man of God no matter what criticism I may take or people point at me,” Owens said after the 31-22 win over the Bengals.

On Tuesday, Owens said of the statement, “God was going to put me in a situation to make that statement.”

Barber gets stolen items back: Some items stolen from Marion Barber's Dallas apartment have been returned to the Cowboys running back.

Barber reported more than $77,000 worth of property was stolen while he was away between March 31 and May 21. Among the items reported stolen were electronic equipment, a Tony Romo-autographed football and a diamond chain worth $36,000. Dallas television station WFAA reported Tuesday that police returned the stolen football and an iPod sporting the Pro Bowl emblem.

Cincy linebacker suspended: The NFL suspended Bengals reserve linebacker Darryl Blackstock for the next four games because he used a performance-enhancing substance.

Steelers kicker's injury not serious: Jeff Reed probably won't miss any games because of a groin injury he sustained in a win over Jacksonville on Sunday. Pittsburgh is off this week.

Saints cornerback on IR: New Orleans starting cornerback Tracy Porter will miss the rest of his rookie season after dislocating his right wrist Monday against Minnesota.
