The third-year coach of the Cowboys will also be the team’s defensive coordinator, owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday. Jones was attending a news conference to announce the opening concert, featuring George Strait, at the Cowboys new stadium. Phillips will be the only head coach/defensive coordinator in the league next season. The Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Brian Stewart on Jan. 16. Although the defense finished eighth in the league in 2008, it began to unravel four games into the season. Phillips took over the play-calling duties and the unit began to improve, particularly on pass rush. Dallas’ 59 sacks were the best in the NFL. http://www.star-telegram.com/332/story/1209202.html
