Chicago Bears *TEAM MOD*

BY BRAD BIGGS bbiggs@suntimes.com Mike Brown, the heart and soul of the Bears for the last nine seasons, was informed Friday that the team will not make him a contract offer. The Bears also cut ties with Marty Booker, one of the top wide receivers in team history, but the biggest story is the Bears seem set to lose a player they want to have back. Sources say Bears offensive tackle John Tait (left) is considering retirement. The team has cut ties with safety Mike Brown (AP/Sun-Times) Two sources said offensive tackle John Tait is seriously considering retirement, and a third source close to the team called it a fait accompli that Tait will not return for 2009 despite having one year left on his contract. Tait played through injuries the last few years and underwent ankle surgery after the 2006 season, but the Bears were hoping to get another year out of him after moving him back to right tackle in 2008 to help prolong his career. With John St. Clair set to become an unrestricted free agent Feb. 27, Tait's departure would leave the team with only one tackle under contract: 2008 first-round pick Chris Williams, who didn't start a game as a rookie after undergoing disc surgery on his back in August. Replacing Tait won't be easy, but Brown was the best natural leader on the team since the Super Bowl XX era. Ethan Lock, who represents both players, declined to comment on Tait's future but said Brown plans to continue his career. The former Pro Bowl performer started 15 games last season before being put on injured reserve with a calf injury that prevented him from finishing three games. Injuries knocked Brown out of 43 games from 2004 through 2007, and the decision comes as no surprise after general manager Jerry Angelo admitted he was ready to move on without Brown a year ago. The Bears must find at least one safety in free agency or the draft. The Bears also must rebuild the line after being one of six teams to have all five linemen start 16 games in 2008. An official announcement from Tait would provide St. Clair, who's seeking a contract as a starter, significant leverage in negotiations and indicate chances are good the Bears again will use a high draft pick on a tackle. St. Clair, who has started 19 consecutive games, hasn't heard from the team. Tait, who signed a six-year, $33 million contract to come to the Bears from Kansas City in 2004, turned 34 last month and has made 139 career starts. He has a base salary of $4.8 million for this coming year with a salary-cap figure of $5.35 million. When asked about his future during the last week of the season, he was noncommittal. ''You notice little things that didn't happen when you were younger,'' he said. ''It just takes a little bit longer to recover from games. I think you have to do a lot more maintenance, just the upkeep. That's the biggest thing. |

I can't say that I'm surprised about the Mike Brown decision. He's good guy, but he is just snakebitten, when it comes to injuries. |
