Ranking the Jerry era second-round picks 1:43 PM Tue, Mar 31, 2009 Tim MacMahon All this thinking about the Cowboys' potential second-round picks got me thinking about all the guys who Jerry Jones and Co. have picked in that round. For no good reason other to fill some free time (mine and yours), I decided to rank every second-rounder since Jerry bought the franchise. I decided to judge the players based solely on their contributions to the Cowboys. I mention that primarily to explain how one of the NFL's best receivers of the last two decades ranks dead last on the list. 1. G/T Larry Allen (1994, 46th overall) - The most overpowering offensive lineman of his era is a no-brainer Hall of Famer. 2. S Darren Woodson (1992, 37th overall) - All-time leading tackler in franchise history has a strong case for the Hall of Fame. 3. FB Daryl Johnston (1989, 39th overall) - Moose, the best blocking fullback of his era, played major role on three Super Bowl title teams. 4. LT Flozell Adams (1998, 38th overall) - Might not have deserved all five Pro Bowl trips, but he's started 162 games over the last 11 seasons. 5. C/G Andre Gurode (2002, 37th overall) - Gaining ground on Adams after three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. 6. LB Dixon Edwards (1991, 37th overall) - Solid player who earned three Super Bowl rings. 7. LB Darrin Smith (1993, 54th overall) - Similar to Edwards, but he has one less ring. 8. LB Randall Godfrey (1996, 49th overall) - Like Edwards and Smith, gave Cowboys four solid seasons before leaving in free agency. 9. RB Julius Jones (2004, 43rd overall) - He's no Steven Jackson, but he was a decent back in Dallas (3,484 rushing yards, 18 TDs in four seasons). 10. WR Kevin Williams (1993, 46th overall) - Dallas native was pretty good return man, serviceable receiver for four seasons with Cowboys. 11. LB Kevin Burnett (2005, 42nd overall pick) - Good special teams player and nickel/dime linebacker couldn't crack starting lineup. 12. WR Antonio Bryant (2002, 63rd overall) - Five years and three teams after his bitter departure from Dallas, he's finally living up to his potential. 13. QB Quincy Carter (2001, 53rd overall) - The most infamous man on this list went 16-15 as the Cowboys' starter. 14. DE Kavika Pittman (1996, 37th overall) - 10 sacks on four seasons with Cowboys. 15. C Al Johnson (2003, 38th overall) - In hindsight, it's amazing that this guy kept Andre Gurode from starting at center for two seasons. 16. OL Solomon Page (1999, 55th overall) - Started almost every game during Dave Campo's tenure as head coach. 17. TE Martellus Bennett (2008, 61st overall) - Has potential to move into top five on this list. 18. TE Anthony Fasano (2006, 53rd overall) - Performed well after getting moved to Miami, but Bennett was an immediate upgrade for the Cowboys. 19. S Tony Dixon (2001, 56th overall) - Made minimal contribution in four seasons with Cowboys and never played another down in NFL. 20. WR Alexander Wright (1990, 26th overall) - Blazing speed never helped him make a touchdown catch as Cowboy. 21. RB Sherman Williams (1995, 46th overall) - Career stats: 1,162 rushing yards, four touchdowns, countless pounds of smoked pot. 22. TE Kendell Watkins (1995, 59th overall) - Ate his way out of league after one season. 23. OT Jacob Rogers (2004, 52nd overall) - The biggest bust of Bill Parcells' tenure appeared in a grand total of two games. 24. CB Dwayne Goodrich (2000, 49th overall) - A bust who brought shame to the franchise. 25. WR Jimmy Smith (1992, 36th overall) - Considering his 12,287 yards and 67 TDs for the Jaguars, it's safe to say the Cowboys shouldn't have let Smith go after injuries kept him off the field for two seasons. |
