Jerry Jones' Next Big Mistake

Quote:

"We may want to do some things in our offense this year with a third quarterback. That's something other than be there as a backup to the second quarterback and be there in case you lose all the quarterbacks ... We could hopefully find a quarterback with a set of skills that we could put some packages in for."

-- Jerry Jones

This now famous quote from Jerry Jones was delivered last week at the NFL owners' meeting. Jones, in his role as the de facto head coach/offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, has decided to implement the “wildcat formation” into the team’s offensive package.

For the uninitiated, the wildcat is a variation of the single wing formation, where the ball is snapped directly to a running back who is lined up behind an imbalanced line. Arkansas, Jones’ alma mater, turned this scheme into an art form in 2007 with RB's Derrick McFadden and Felix Jones.

The Miami Dolphins began running it extensively last year, and it has now found its way into the playbooks of half the teams in the NFL. With the right personnel and proper execution, the wildcat can put tremendous pressure on the defense. It was only a matter of time until Dallas jumped on this trendy bandwagon, and Jones’ statement should have come as no surprise.

However, his revelation still touched off a firestorm throughout the Cowboys Nation. Bloggers and sports talk radio programs throughout the country were abuzz with speculation about the nature of Jones’ true intentions. All the conjecture came down to one burning question.

Is Jerry Jones implementing the wildcat formation because he secretly plans to bring Michael Vick to Dallas?

On Thursday, Michael Irvin spent his entire radio program on the subject. The DFW sports media has devoted extensive time to debating its merits. Even the national media has begun to mention this possibility.

In all fairness to Jerry Jones, he has never given any indication that he is considering such a move. On the other hand, Vick’s NFL rights still belong to the Atlanta Falcons, so Jones can’t comment on the issue without violating the league’s tampering rule.

However, if past history is the one true indicator of future events, the hunch here is that this is exactly what Jones envisions. The same man who brought Demetrius Underwood, Tank Johnson, Terrell Owens and the Pacman to Texas is salivating at the prospect of signing up PETA’s Public Enemy #1 to quarterback America’s team. Jones is either the patron saint of second chances or he suffers from a very unhealthy addiction to the spotlight.

Unfortunately, I have another hunch – bringing Michael Vick to Dallas would be the worst possible scenario, both for the Cowboys and for Vick himself.

While America is generally a forgiving nation, there are two types of transgressions which instantly create antipathy in the most compassionate of people. Foremost of these is the abuse of a child. The other is an act of cruelty toward an animal.

A person who harms a child is almost always permanently ostracized in our society. A person who harms an animal, like Michael Vick, can make it back into our collective good graces. However, the road to redemption is long, hard, and rocky. If Vick is to recreate his life, and rebuild his football career, it has to be in the right place and under the right circumstances.

Dallas, Texas is not that place. And the circus that has become the Cowboys' franchise definitely does not offer the right circumstances. A quick look at Vick’s history makes that patently obvious.

Vick flourished while playing at Virginia Tech. No doubt, the main reason is his prodigious talent. However, the environment he found in Blacksburg was also a major factor.

Frank Beamer, the head coach at Virginia Tech, embodies all that is right about college football. In addition to cranking out winning teams, Beamer produces something much more important – good citizens. Perhaps long time NFL coach Jim Mora said it best, "There's a certain culture they have up there, they are all grounded kids and we want to have that same kind of culture here."

Here is the point – in a supportive, disciplined and well structured environment, Vick did extremely well. If he is going to make a comeback, it needs to be in place as close to his Beamer-Blacksburg experience as possible. In other words, he needs a situation which is the exact opposite of what he would find in Valley Ranch.

For their part, the Dallas Cowboys have enough dysfunction without bringing in another media sideshow. Even more important is the effect signing Vick would have on the Cowboys' fan base.

We love our dogs in Texas, and bringing in a person who has admitted to killing and maiming canines for sport will alienate a large portion of Dallas loyalists. Jones needs to recognize that many Dallas fans, already disillusioned by the antics of T.O. and Pacman, will turn their back on the franchise if Vick becomes a Cowboy.

Besides, if Dallas is serious about using the wildcat package, they already have a gifted athlete who has successfully run this formation in the past. The afore-mentioned Felix Jones from Arkansas is already under contract to the Cowboys.

It is the hope here that Jones realizes a potential marriage between Vick and the Cowboys has virtually no chance of succeeding. Unfortunately, that is probably wishful thinking. The Dallas owner seems to suffer from delusional thinking in this type of situation. In fact, those who follow the Cowboys, and are familiar with the decision making process that typifies the Jerry Jones era, have already faced the inevitable.

Michael Vick in a silver and blue uniform is a foregone conclusion.
