Canty happy to be part of 'tremendous defense’ in New York By CHAREAN WILLIAMS After spending four seasons with Dallas, Chris Canty said it "wasn’t particularly hard [to leave]. The movers were at Chris Canty’s new home last week. He is starting to feel at home in the New York Giants’ locker room, too. Canty left the Dallas Cowboys almost three months ago, the Giants’ six-year, $42 million offer too rich for Dallas to beat. He started organized team activities with his new team last week. "It feels good," Canty said in a telephone interview. "I put on my jersey, and it’s the same 99. Different jersey, a little different football team, different team atmosphere, but it’s very exciting, and I’m happy to be a part of it." In his four seasons in Dallas, Canty played in all 64 possible games, with 50 starts. He made 148 tackles, 10 sacks and defensed eight passes. But Canty, who has his weight up from the low 300s to 315-320, expects his stats to go up now that he’s in a 4-3 defense. "Three-four defensive lines get a bad rap of sorts, because they don’t make a lot of stats," Canty said. "They’re not statisticians out there. They don’t make a lot of big, big plays that people see on a consistent basis. It is what it is." Canty joins what could be the best defensive line in football, with Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka, Dave Tollefson, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford and Rocky Bernard. He is working at both tackle and end, but is expected to play primarily at tackle, where Fred Robbins and Cofield both have had off-season knee surgery. "Obviously, there’s an opportunity to be part of a tremendous team, a tremendous defense and particularly the defensive line," Canty said. " ... When you have those kind of guys on your front, you give yourself an opportunity to be successful. They really can’t key in on one particular player. So that was something that was definitely attractive for me." Canty, 26, said he has "no sour grapes" about the Cowboys letting him go. He got $17.25 million in guaranteed money from the Giants after the Cowboys never made a serious move to keep him from free agency. "It wasn’t particularly hard [to leave]," Canty said. "I did enjoy playing with that group of guys down there. It’s a great group of guys on that defense. Business is business, and you’ve got to be where they want you. Dallas pretty much said, by their non-action, that they didn’t want me there anymore. That’s fine. I understand it’s a business. "I’m just excited to be a part of the Giants. It’s a football team that really wanted me to come up here and be a part of it." New start for Loper Daniel Loper left Tennessee for Detroit. No, he’s not crazy. The former Texas Tech offensive lineman wanted a chance to start, so he followed former Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to the Motor City. "It’s always hard to leave a place where you’ve had such a great connection with the players and coaches and staff," Loper said in a telephone interview. "I played four years there, and that was a lot of fun. But the opportunity in Detroit was great. I knew they were headed in the right direction, especially with the head coach they hired. I just knew it’d be a good opportunity for me. So far, I’m absolutely loving it." Loper backed up four positions on the offensive line in Tennessee, but never started a game in four seasons. The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder will get a chance to start at left guard in Detroit. "I’m about to have a child [due in two weeks]," Loper said. "For her to be there for that first game is going to be really special." Peterson working hard Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is spending less time on endorsements and appearances this off-season and more time working on his game. He has watched lots of video of himself in an effort to figure out why he fumbled an NFL-high nine times, losing four. "When I watched the film, it really wasn’t the guys, the blows they were hitting [me with]," the former Oklahoma star told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "It was me being careless with the ball, trying to go the extra yard, get to the end zone, because that’s my mind-set. "There’s so many things I can work on. Fumbling the ball, that’s not my main concern at all. I do a good job holding onto the ball. I guess you could argue [that based on] last year, but that’s definitely not my main concern." Winston hits it hard Eric Winston’s first love was baseball. But growing up in Midland, as big as he was, football coaches loved him. The Houston Texans’ offensive tackle got to go back to his roots recently, though, and showed what might have been when he hit three upper-deck shots at Minute Maid Park. He raised $3,300 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston at the Texans’ Home Run Derby. "It was a lot of fun," Winston said in a telephone interview, "and it was for a great cause." Winston, 25, has made good in football. He went to the University of Miami and became a third-round pick of the Texans in 2006. Before last season, Winston signed a contract extension, assuring that he will be the Texans’ right tackle for a long time to come. "I get a chance to fortify my family here in Houston," Winston said. "We bought a home. It’s just nice knowing that you’re going to be at the same place for the next several years. It puts your mind at ease. That’s not something a lot of football players get to have. It’s an ever-moving business, and so many players get cut and so many people get traded. It’s a good feeling knowing I’ll be here for the next several years." Winston started seven games as a rookie and all 16 games in both 2007 and 2008. For the first time in their history, the Texans finally have an offensive line they feel good about, with Winston and left tackle Duane Brown, a first-round pick last year, as their bookends. Though Winston is a long way from retirement, he has thought about life after football. He recently appeared on ESPN2’s First Take morning show, and he has a regular one-day-a-week radio talk show in Houston. His Web site, ericwinston73.com, has become popular with Texans and University of Miami fans. "I love talking about sports," Winston said. "Whatever I do after I’m done, whether it’s coaching or management or something like that, I’d love to still keep in the realm of sports." |
