In eight starts this season, Smoltz has an ERA of 8.33, a far cry from what the Red Sox were hoping for when they signed the future Hall of Famer to a one-year, $5.5 million deal in the offseason. Billy Traber, who gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings on Thursday on the day he was called up from AAA, was also designated for assignment. Right-hander Junichi Tazawa was called up from Pawtucket to the big-league club to fill one of the roster spots. Boston also claimed infielder Chris Woodward off waivers.
